Timeliner is an annotation tool for music education. It allows students and educators to describe the structure of a piece of music (or any audio), creating a hierarchy of parts and visualising the parts as nested bubbles.

Originally a desktop tool, the Variations Audio Timeliner, has been used in music pedagogy by Indiana University and others. Digirati created a new web application that produces output in the IIIF Presentation API version 3 format, which means that any work produced in the tool can be published using open standards and shared with other applications and players.

The application also demonstrates the kinds of application that can be built with the extension of IIIF to time-based media. The structure of the music is modelled as IIIF Ranges, just like the structure of a book, and markers on the timeline are using the point annotations enabled by the new specification.
